148 Green plants are essential to all life on Earth. They produce food and oxygen from simple molecules of water and carbon dioxide. Water is absorbed through the root hairs, and then passed up the xylem vessels to the leaves. Carbon dioxide is absorbed through the stomata on the underside of the leaves. During daylight, light energy is trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts. The energy bonds the water to the carbon dioxide, forming glucose sugar and oxygen. The oxygen is released, through the stomata, into the atmosphere. The glucose can by used by the plant for respiration, or may be stored as starch. This is very obvious is plants like the potato. Some plants are slow to convert glucose to starch, and they may store lots of sugar - like the sugar cane and sugar beet plants. Animals use the oxygen released for respiration, and eat plants for food. Drag the Tiles into position to put the segments of text into the correct order.
