166 Have you ever tried to count the stars? On dark nights you can see hundreds. There are millions more you can't see, though, because they're so faint they can only be found using a telescope. Stars look tiny from the Earth, but if you could see one close up, you would see a huge burning ball of glowing gas, like our Sun. The Sun is the nearest star to the Earth, at a distance of approximately 150 million kilometres. Temperatures at the centre of the Sun are about 15 million °C. The Sun is extremely bright. You should never look directly at it because its light is so strong it would damage your eyes, even on hazy days. Compared to other stars, though, the Sun is not particularly hot or bright. And although a million Earths could fit inside the Sun, it is much smaller than many stars. Some stars are so big, in fact, that a million stars like our Sun could fit inside them.
